Thyme essential oil

Thymus vulgaris

Thyme is an evergreen herb native to the Mediterranean basin. It grows wild on the vast scrublands of southern France, principally in Provence region. Its flowering branches are hand-harvested or reaped in May, June and July. Thyme has been recognized as an herb and medicinal plant since ancient times. The Egyptians used Thyme essential oil in embalming rituals, and the Greeks burned it as incense to honour their gods.

Slow extraction of the oil is done by traditional process, through steam, in dedicated equipment. The essential oil exudes a potent agrestic, phenolic fragrance, characteristic of the thymol chemotype.

Main components are thymol, para-cymene and gamma-terpinene. Thyme essential oil also contains a range of additional compounds, such as myrcene, borneol, linalool, alpha-thujone, alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, linalool, beta-caryophyllene and carvacrol.
